Sunita was a delegate from Israel at the 2011 World Harp Congress in Vancouver, Canada. She was interviewed there about her work in Israel. In the video below, Sunita discusses her work as a therapeutic harpist in Israeli hospitals, and the organizing of the first Israeli Harp festival in October 2011.

Sunita also works as a therapeutic harpist at Schneider and Meir Hospitals. She was featured on Israeli television as a tribute to her medical work. The Television program can be viewed at this link.

Background Music

The harp is ideally suited for elegant background music at parties, weddings or any event from relaxing harp music to help create the atmosphere. Sunita's harp music can be adapted to a wide variety of venues and audiences.

Concerts
Concerts can be organized in private homes or public venues. Programs range from a single 30-40 minute set to a full 2-hour concert with intermission.

Lecture / Demonstrations
Sunita also presents harp lecture/demonstrations for organizations or schools. She performs and shares her wealth of knowledge about the instrument and the musical traditions it is part of.

A Harp for Yasmin

Yasmin Gebara is blind from birth and lives in the village of Salem, just to the east of Nablus in the middle of the West Bank. She graduated college in 2010 with a major in English literature, and writes poetry in English which you can read at this link. Yasmin's father was murdered in 2004 and her mother Muna has been raising six children.

Through the cooperation of the Villages Group, an Israeli/Palestinian peace group, Sunita and Park Stickney visited the music program in Salem where Park conducted a children's workshop and jammed with one of the teachers who played oud. Yasmin just loved the harp and explored the instrument by touch with Sunita's help.

Sunita made a commitment to help raise funds and buy her a harp. In addition Sunita pledges to visit Salem twice a month and provide lessons. The harp selected is the new 34-string Celtic harp made by Peter at Woodsong Instruments in the Galilee. The harp costs 10,800 shekels, approximately $2,850.

Please donate what you can to help provide Yasmin with a harp. Donations will contribute to the cost of the harp and help defray the teaching expenses. Donations are not tax-deductable.

UPDATE APRIL 2012
Due to the generosity of dozens of people, and one large gift, the harp has now been ordered for Yasmin, and delivery is expected in June 2012. So far $5,148 has been raised. The surplus funds beyond the cost of the harp will be used to maintain the harp, buy extra strings, an electronic tuner, harp stool, and defray the teaching and travel costs.

This is an opportunity not to be missed. In cooperation with the Israel Harp Festival (Jaffa), a special tour has been organized to celebrate the sunrise on Masada with harp music by Park Stickney and Sunita Staneslow.

Park (USA/Switzerland) is an international performing artist and the guest of honor at the Harp Festival. Sunita (USA/Israel) is one of Israel's leading Celtic harpists. Together they will will welcome the sunrise with the magical sounds of the harp.

After the early morning pickup you'll travel with the guide and Sunita to Masada, and ascend by foot from the western side. It is a fairly easy 20-minute walk. Those of you with strong shoulders are invited to assist in carrying the harp.

On top of Masada, the performance will begin just as the sun is rising. Then we'll retire from the viewpoint to the synagog area where breakfast will be served together with more harp music. The traditional Middle East breakfast will include fresh Arabic coffee, various salads, hummos, eggs, and pitta (flat bread). Please remember to bring your own water.

After breakfast the guide will conduct a tour of Masada, taking in the magnificence of Herod's construction, and learning about the tragic end to the Jewish rebellion against the Romans.

The descent will be via cable car, after which the bus will drive north along the Dead Sea to En Gedi beach, where those who wish, can spend some time floating in the water. Then there will be a visit to the En Gedi nature preserve, and a 1/2 hour walk to the exotic oasis and waterfall at the edge of the desert. The nature preserve contains a number of rare plants, birds and animals including Ibex - a type of small deer, and Hyraz - small furry creatures.

Then lunch and return to Jerusalem passing Jericho en-route.
